The Story Beneath Our Floors
Our story began the same way many of the barns we reclaim once did — with a respect for history and a belief that old structures deserve a second life. Long before modern lumberyards existed, craftsmen felled trees directly from their own property and shaped them by hand with broadaxes, adzes, and froes. Sawyers worked over open pits guiding long pit saws through massive trunks, leaving vertical kerf marks that still whisper of 18th and early 19th century workmanship.
As the country grew, water- and steam-powered mills introduced circular and band saws, their crescent-shaped patterns subtly dating boards to the industrial age. Timber frames were assembled using mortise-and-tenon joinery — chisels carving precise cavities, hand augers boring peg holes, hardwood pins locking beams together without nails. These weren’t temporary buildings; they were generational structures, raised to stand for centuries.
The wood we carefully reclaim has already endured decades — sometimes centuries — of sun, weight, wind, and weather. It matured slowly within barns, mills, fencing, and agricultural buildings before ever entering our workshop. By the time it reaches your project, it has been shaped first by forest, then by hand, then by time.
When you choose our flooring, you are not simply selecting a material. You are preserving a fragment of early American craftsmanship — a historic piece thoughtfully repurposed, carrying forward the marks of the hands that built it and the generations who lived alongside it.
Circle saw marks, knots, old nail holes, tight grain pattern, worM damage, weathered from natural elements, and more.
